The Meath Chronicle was founded in 1887, and has a very proud nationalist tradition. It was one of the first newspapers to call for full Irish Independence in 1916 and was suppressed by the British in 1918, when the authorised removed parts of its printing press. However the Chronicle refused to remain silent and soon circulated once again and continues to be amongst the most widely circulated papers of the midlands.
The Meath Chronicle archives are a wonderful resource for all those interested in family genealogical research with their detailed births, deaths (obituaries) and marriages. The provincial press was also far less censored by the British authorities than their national equivalent. As a result they give both the professional and amateur historian a unique perspective of Irelandís turbulent past as well as the local impact of major national and international events.
The archives are now available online at www.irishnewsarchive.com. View every edition from the last 100 years exactly as it was published on that day.
