Founded by Edmund Finn in 1767 and published on Wednesdays and Saturdays and was brought to such places as Carlow and Castledermot. For ten years the Finn family enjoyed the prosperity brought by their paper but sadly Edmund Finn died in 1777.
It was then left up to Edmund's wife Catherine Finn to take on the extraordinary task of running the paper while taking care of her seven young children. Fame was thrust on Catherine by the death of her husband as during the 18th and 19th century no other woman played such a role.
The Finn’s Leinster Journal archives are a wonderful resource for all those interested in family genealogical research with their detailed births, deaths (obituaries) and marriages. The provincial press was also far less censored by the British authorities than their national equivalent. As a result they give both the professional and amateur historian a unique perspective of Ireland’s turbulent past as well as the local impact of major national and international events.
The archives will be available online at www.irishnewsarchive.com soon. Fully word searchable and completely indexed Irish Newspaper Archives offers individual researchers and institutes / universities alike unprecedented access to a wealth of local history.
